The Cambridge community came together last weekend to take part in the iconic Chariots of Fire relay race.

Nearly 300 teams of six took part, from seasoned runners to those dressed as superheroes, to raise money for Magpas Air Ambulance, the helicopter emergency service operating across the east of England.

The nearly two-mile route, which started at Queen’s Green, continued past Queen’s College and along King’s Parade, over the river at Garret Hostel Lane and took in Clare College on the way to the finish line, was a little muddy after several days of rain – but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the runners.

The popular relay, organised in partnership with the HCR Hewitsons Charity, has raised over £1.5m for charity since its inception in 1992. This year, so far, nearly £40,000 has been raised.

The race was also attended by retired British sprinter Derek Raymond, who famously finished the men’s 400 metres semi-final at the 1992 Olympic Games with the assistance of his father, having torn his hamstring. The athlete gave a motivational speech to the runners prior to the relay.

Partner and Head of Cambridge Office Inger Anson said: “This year we saw nearly 1,800 runners take to the streets of Cambridge to support Magpas Air Ambulance. I’m thrilled that we’ve managed to raise so much for such a worthy cause”

“Each year Chariots of Fire gets better and better. I’d like to thank everyone involved in making it happen, and making the race – now in its 31st year – the best one yet.”

Charity Partner Adam Finch, who took part in the race, said: “Yet again the community spirit of Cambridge and beyond shone through – we’re delighted that we’ve had our largest turnout for some time despite the weather and that we’ve been able to raise such a huge amount for Magpas Air Ambulance.”
