Safeguarding lawyer brings expertise to sports law offering from HCR Law

Safeguarding in sport remains a critical concern, as evidenced by the findings of the 2022 Whyte Review, which exposed significant and ongoing issues regarding athlete welfare.

With a summer of sport ahead,  the world will not only witness a showcase of exceptional athletic talent but will also look to ensure that the safety, wellbeing, and rights of athletes and all those involved in all competitions are protected.

Kate Oliver, a sports safeguarding specialist, has recently joined HCR Law’s Insurance, Risk and Regulatory team as a Partner. Her expertise across the sports sector has proved invaluable to a range of sports organisations and professionals. Additionally, her background complements the firm’s growing Sports, Media, and Entertainment sector, headed by Partners David King and Raj Pahuja.

Kate’s criminal defence background uniquely positions her to work in the best interests of both sports clubs and individuals, setting her apart from other safeguarding lawyers. Her experience in the sector is cross-discipline; from football to gymnastics, having supported in a diverse range of areas.

Kate contributed to drafting governing bodies’ return-to-sport tenders during the pandemic for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. Additionally, she has represented high-profile international athletes in challenging match bans and addressing failed drug tests with UK Anti-Doping, exemplifying her expertise and impact in the field. She also regularly advises on handling both internal and external safeguarding investigations.

With Sport England partway through their £14.8m programme establishing a network of welfare officers, Kate’s experience in the safeguarding arena has enabled her to work with a multitude of sports clubs and sportspeople, from grassroots to elite, ensuring they are safe in their chosen sport.

Following her appointment, Kate Oliver said: “Safeguarding should be a top priority for every club and individual involved in sports at local, national, and international levels. The safety and welfare of those participating and competing are paramount.
